Columbia has experienced steady job growth over the past few years accompanied by the steady decrease in joblessness.
Some of the city's top industries include information technology and manufacturing, with organizations like IT-oLogy and Westinghouse Electric employing a large number of residents. Careers in information technology revolve around the insurance industry, and the University of South Carolina offers research opportunities, one of which is the interdisciplinary Innovista Program that focuses primarily on the development of alternative green energy.
There are also lots of opportunities in the health care and education fields thanks to USC and the Medical University of South Carolina, as well as Palmetto Health.
